HORNET HUNTERJAPAN · FIELD & FILM

FOR NATURAL-HISTORY PRODUCTIONS

Film giant hornets
in Japan.

Bring the brief. The monk brings the field experience.

Hornet Hunter is the giant-hornet filmmaking practice of UnDaoDu — the monk, Michael J. Trout. His work spans on-screen participation, hornet consultancy, location planning and Japan production support. It began with beekeeping and the need to understand the hornets threatening his colonies; it grew into more than a decade of documentary work.

Looking for a “murder hornet” filmmaker? That widely used term often refers to the Asian giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia. Tell us the species and behaviour your story needs.

Ehime: a place, and a working relationship

Beautiful rural Ehime, on Shikoku, is central to the monk’s hornet-filming experience. His repeated work with beekeeper and hornet specialist Susumu Tokunaga brings local knowledge to location discussions and shoot planning. Based in Fukui today, the monk helps productions scope their work in Japan.

Send a useful first brief

Include your production company, programme or working title, filming window, crew size, intended sequences, camera requirements and any deadlines. Rates, travel, permissions and practical arrangements are agreed after the brief is reviewed.

Wildlife activity, weather, access and permissions affect what can be filmed. A plan should include time for observation and alternatives.
